Effective Governance in Tin Mining to Ensure Community Welfare and Environmental Sustainability: Insights from Prof. Dr. Reda Manthovani

Kabarindoraya.com | Bangka Belitung July 17, 2024 The Indonesian government, through the Attorney General's Office, is committed to ensuring sustainable and responsible management of the tin mining sector. This commitment was emphasized by Prof. Dr. Reda Manthovani, the Junior Attorney General for Intelligence (JAM-Intelijen), during the closing remarks of the Coordination Meeting on Law Enforcement and Governance in Tin Mining in Bangka Belitung Province.

Prof. Dr. Reda Manthovani highlighted the critical economic importance of tin mining, especially for Bangka Belitung Province, which heavily relies on this sector as a primary source of income. However, he also pointed out the environmental and social challenges posed by the mining activities, including pollution, deforestation, and social conflicts.

> “The Indonesian government, through the Attorney General's Office, is committed to ensuring that the tin mining sector is managed sustainably and responsibly. One of the efforts undertaken is to enforce laws and governance to improve the management of tin mining,” stated Prof. Dr. Reda Manthovani.

The Coordination Meeting on Law Enforcement and Governance in Tin Mining aimed to:

1. Raise awareness about the importance of law enforcement in preventing corruption in the tin mining sector.
2. Conduct an economic impact inventory and engage stakeholders in finding solutions.
3. Inventory Strategic National Projects (PSN) related to the tin mining sector for asset recovery coordination with the Attorney General's Office.

During his address, JAM-Intelijen stressed the following points:

- The importance of legal compliance for companies involved in tin mining.
- The necessity of responsible mining practices to mitigate environmental damage, including land degradation and water pollution.
- The role of law enforcement in supporting sustainable economic development in Bangka Belitung.

JAM-Intelijen expressed gratitude to all attendees, including Acting Governor of Bangka Belitung, regional law enforcement officials, and stakeholders from PT Timah Tbk, for their collaborative efforts in improving the governance of tin mining in the province.

The meeting concluded with a call for ongoing collaboration among government bodies, law enforcement, and the private sector to ensure that tin mining operations not only contribute to economic growth but also protect the environment and benefit the local communities.
